Lola stood at the door of the bar and watched Lance drive off. He’d taken an SUV that must have belonged to the thugs and she planned on giving him a few more minutes before calling for backup. She watched his taillights disappear into the darkness then went back into the bar.

Inside, the women looked like they were getting ready to leave. By rights, Lola shouldn’t let them, but technically, she hadn’t found any bodies yet. No crime had been committed. She was just checking out a report of gunshots. “Where are you going to stay tonight?” she said to them.

“The house will do us for a while longer,” a woman in a tracksuit with a blanket over her shoulders said.

“You’re not worried something will happen there?”

“Like what? Your friend killed the whole gang.”

Lola nodded, but she knew nothing was ever that simple. Gangsters had friends. They had business associates. They had creditors. “I’ll be needing to take statements tomorrow,” she said.

“Are you telling us not to leave the state?”

“I think that would be for the best.”

“The bodies are out by the Escalade,” one of the other women said. “Beneath the tarp.”

“I’ll pretend you didn’t say that,” Lola said. “Mind if I have a look around after you leave?”

“Knock yourself out,” the woman in the blanket said.

“Computer’s in the office,” the woman behind the bar said. “The cages are in the basement.”

“Cages?” Lola said, eyes widening.

“You’ll see,” the woman said.

They had keys for the Escalade outside and seemed to have a pretty good idea of where they were going, so Lola left them to it. There was some cash in the till and some more in a safe behind the bar, and when the women took it, Lola pretended not to notice that either.

“There’s an organization in town,” she said before they left.

“The shelter?” the woman in the blanket said.

“It’s a good place,” Lola said. “They can help you get back on your feet.”

“We’re not on our feet now?”

“She thinks we’re on our backs,” one of the younger girls said. “With our legs spread.”

“I didn’t say that,” Lola said.

“You didn’t have to.”

“Look, I don’t care what you do. Go there. Go somewhere else. But that house you’re going back to tonight? It’s not going to be safe once word of this bloodbath gets out.”

The women said nothing then. They knew she was right.

“Come to the station tomorrow,” she said. “First thing. I’ll need statements. If anyone’s interested in the crisis center, you can tell me then, and I’ll get something set up.”

She watched them leave in the Escalade, pulling away carefully from the tarp that she was already dreading looking under. Another wolf howled, nearer than before, and she glanced at her watch. It was almost twenty minutes since she’d been sent out. If she didn’t call dispatch soon, someone would come looking for her.

She reached into her pocket and felt the cold metal of the hard disk. She was breaking the law by removing it from the scene, but
